The England Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative (ECSFDI) is funded by Defra and delivered in partnership by Environment Agency and Natural England. The River Nene Catchment Partnership is one of 10 new catchments offering free advice to targeted farmers to improve water quality.
14 farmers and 8 agronomists attended the Northamptonshire launch event which saw informative presentations and demonstrations aimed at helping farmers improve their soil management.
The day commenced with an introduction to the Nene Catchment Partnership by Robin Field, RNRP, and Michelle Claxon, CSF Regional Co-ordinator, which included an overview of water quality issues and hotspots of the River Nene.
This was followed by an interesting and informative talk by Simon Draper, of Simon Draper Agronomy Ltd, who highlighted the problems caused by various topics such as run off, soil compaction and correctly completing the required soil management paperwork. This included a demonstration on the field in soil testing.
Colin Myram, of C.M. Consulting Ltd then discussed good Metaldehyde management, sources of metaldehyde pollution and gave best practice advice for storing, handling and spreading the chemical. This was demonstrated in the farm yard by spreading some pellets, and showing the different factors that affect dispersal of the pellets.
