NORTH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CARBON SINK FORESTRY WORKSHOP
13th January 2010 at Top Lodge, Fineshade, Nr Corby.
Climate Change is now one of the major threats facing the UK. Whilst there are many other factors, the single biggest emissions of carbon from any sector are those linked to world de-forestation, the permanent clearance of native forests for other land uses.
To address this issue, the River Nene Regional Park, Forestry Commission and North Northamptonshire Joint Planning Unit held this workshop to introduce the exciting concept of "Carbon Sink Forestry", and explore the potential for its adoption in North Northamptonshire.
In brief, Carbon Sink Forestry involves the planting of new woodlands to absorb CO2, over an extended period of time. This not only provides carbon capture and an essential cooling effect, but offers the wide range of environmental, leisure and recreational benefits that are associated with strategic landscape scale Green Infrastructure initiatives.
This proposal, which would see the planting of up to 1,200 ha of new woodland in North Northamptonshire by 2025, fully supports the government's "UK Low Carbon Transition Plan" for the UK to become a low carbon country. The plan sets ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions to meet international commitments to limit the rise in average global temperature to no more than 2 degrees Celsius, thereby avoiding the most damaging impacts of climate change.
